What a welcome bonus actually is
A welcome bonus is the first promo a casino offers when you register. Operators compete hardest for new players, which is why welcomes tend to be the most generous bonuses you'll see all year.
Most welcomes have two parts. A deposit match (something like 100% up to €500) and a free spins pack (often 100 spins spread over the first few days). Some casinos stretch the offer over your first two or three deposits, which they call a welcome package.
How they work in practice
Once you sign up and make your first qualifying deposit, the bonus credit lands in a separate bonus balance. You play with your own money first, then the bonus kicks in once that's gone. Some casinos play both balances at the same time. The terms tell you which.
Welcome bonuses always come with wagering requirements. That's a multiplier you need to bet through before bonus winnings turn into real, withdrawable cash. Typical numbers are 30x to 45x. The wagering can apply to the bonus on its own (B) or to bonus plus deposit (D+B), and that detail changes everything.
PlannedPlay tip: A 30x bonus-only requirement on a €100 bonus means €3,000 in wagers. The same bonus at 30x D+B is €6,000. Always check which version the casino uses.
Wagering and the small print
- Wagering multiplier. The X factor (e.g. 35x).
- Max bet while wagering. Usually €5. Bigger bets void the bonus.
- Game weighting. Slots usually count 100%. Table games often count 10% to 20%.
- Validity. Most bonuses give you 14 to 30 days.
- Max cashout. Some welcomes cap winnings (for example, €500 max from a €50 bonus).
Lower wagering and a sensible max-bet rule mean you actually unlock the value. Don't get hypnotised by the headline. A 100% match at 50x B+D is harder to clear than a 50% match at 25x B.
How to spot a good welcome
- Pick a casino with a trusted licence (UKGC, MGA, or a Curaçao licence with a strong reputation).
- Aim for wagering at or below 35x B.
- Make sure your favourite slot or game contributes 100% to wagering.
- Check there's no max-cashout cap, or that any cap is reasonable.
- Look at the validity window so you can realistically clear it.

Welcomes vs everything else
You only claim a welcome once. After that, the regular promos take over: reloads, cashback, free spins and no-deposit offers. A great welcome is a strong signal that the rest of the casino is well run, but the long-term value usually lives in the loyalty programme.
How PlannedPlay picks these bonuses
We test every operator before listing a bonus. That means a real signup, a real deposit where possible, the actual wagering maths, and a withdrawal timed end to end. We also re-check active bonuses every quarter, so what you read here is what the casino is actually offering today.
You can read more about our process on the about page, or browse the full casino directory to see the operators behind these offers.
Play it safe
Bonuses make casino sessions more fun, but they can also push you to play longer or bet bigger than you planned. Set deposit, loss and time limits before you claim anything. Every licensed casino has these tools in the cashier, and they take about ten seconds to switch on.
Our responsible gambling guide covers self-exclusion options, deposit caps and helplines for your country. If a session stops feeling fun, walk away. The bonus will be there next week.
